Albert J. "AJ" Irvin Jr., age 46, of Philadelphia and formerly of Mahanoy City, died Tuesday April 25, 2017 surrounded by family and friends at Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia.  Born at the former Ashland State Hospital he was the son of Sarah "Sally" (Mayer) Irvin of Mahanoy City and Albert J. Irvin Sr. of Pittston.
AJ was a 1989 graduate of Mahanoy Area High School and a 1993 graduate of Muhlenberg College where he majored in Drama and Theatre Arts.  He began his career  performing in musicals at the Muhlenberg Summer Music Theatre, Civic Theatre of Allentown and the Pennsylvania Stage Company. AJ's acting credits included playing Smokey in "Damn Yankees" regional tour and Squash Bernstein in "Victor/Victoria national tour.  A highlight of his career was performing for 6 years as Santa Claus with the Rockettes in the touring production of Radio City's "Christmas Spectacular.  He also performed at Rose's Turn and Don't Tell Mama in piano bars in New York City and received the 2002 Bistro Award for outstanding piano bar vocalist.  He was currently employed at the Bike Stop in Philadelphia.  He was a member of the Actors Equity Association.


Surviving in addition to his parents are his step mother Ann Irvin, and half brothers Shawn and Daniel Irvin, a great- aunt, uncles, aunts and cousins. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Sunday May 7, 2017 at 2:30 PM at St. Paul's UCC Church, Main and Pine Streets, Mahanoy City.  The Rev. Dr. John Reid will officiate.  Interment will be private.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in AJ's name to ACTION (Active Christian Teens In Our Neighborhood) Youth Group, C/O Debbie Walker, 402 E. Pine St., Mahanoy City, PA  17948 or the charity of the donors choice would be appreciated.  David D.
