John D. Schaar Obituary
Mr. John D. "Jack" Schaar, age 89, of Locust Valley, died Sunday evening at Hometown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born at the former Locust Mountain Hospital he was the son of the late John P. Lillian (Davies) Schaar. He was a 1940 graduate of Mahanoy City High School and also attended McCann School of Business. Jack enlisted in the Navy in 1942 because of the Pearl Harbor attack. After training and radio school he was assigned as a plank owner (Original Crew Member) at the commissioning of the Battleship The USS New Jersey (BB62) at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard with Captain Carl F. Holden in Command. He served aboard during all of her W.W.II Engagements and earned the rating of Petty Officer Radioman Second Class. He received the following medals for his wartime service: American Campaign, Asiatic/Pacific Campaign with 1 silver and 4 bronze stars, The Philippine Liberation with 2 bronze stars and the World War II Victory Medal. He also received the Navy Combat Action Ribbon, the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation and an Honorable Discharge. Jack was the owner and operator of the former Scharr Buick Dealership in Mahanoy City. He was a member of the First Congregational Church , American Legion Post 74,a 50 year member of FA & M 357 all of Mahanoy City and the USS New Jersey. Preceding him in death in addition to his parents was his first wife the former Kathryn Faust and a brother Robert Schaar. Survivors include his wife the former Elizabeth Slotcavage, a daughter Kathryn Burke of Allentown, a sister Nancy Herring of Mahanoy City, 2 grandchildren Adam and David Burke, nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to call at David D. Jarrett Funeral Home of Mahanoy City on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 PM. Private funeral services will be held Friday from the First Congregational Church with the Rev. Robert Adams officiating. Interment with military honors will be at Sky View Memorial Park in Hometown.
