William R. Moore Obituary

On Saturday, June 13th our loving husband and father passed on to his eternal reward at the age of 91. He was a man of strength, compassion, values, and deep faith. His love of family and country were unmatched.  He was one of nine children born to William and Catherine Wirtz Moore.  William lived most of his life in Mahanoy City and attended St. Fidelis School. He graduated from Mahanoy City High School and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1941.  William was a member of the 1st Marine Division in the Solomon Islands Campaign (Guadalcanal) and Marianas Campaign (Guam) during WWII.  Rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant, he received the Combat Action Ribbon, Navy/Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon, Expeditionary Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, American Defense Medal and Korean Service Medal. After a period of time in the Villanova OCS, he was honorably discharged in 1945.  Bill enlisted in the Marine Reserves and was recalled to active duty for the Korean War.  His combat duties included heavy artillery and water distillation.  Like many of his comrades, he held a special place in his heart for the heroic members of the Navy who engaged a Japanese fleet and prevented a large-scale landing on Guadalcanal.  Upon returning to civilian life, Bill began working at the City Shirt Factory in Mahanoy City where he met his wife of 67 years, Nancy.  Bill and Nancy worked very hard and provided a great life for their two sons. Through the ups and downs of life, their love for each other never wavered.  Bill was a life member of the Good American Hose Company and the American Legion of Mahanoy City.  He was  initially a member of St. Fidelis and then Blessed Teresa of Calcutta parish.  His love in the Catholic faith was constantly displayed in all his actions.  Fishing, hunting, wood working and cooking were his hobbies and he was great at all of them.  Nobody made a better potato salad than Bill.  Bill is survived by his wife of 67 years the former Nancy Cook.  He is also survived by two sons, William and Joseph, his grandson Erik Moore and his companion Michele, a great granddaughter, Emilee, a brother Paul Moore, and a sister Anna Demko.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated by the Rev. Kevin P. Gallagher on Thursday morning at 11AM from Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Church.  Interment with military honors will follow in St. Fidelis Cemetery in Mahanoy Township.  Friends may call at the church on Thursday beginning at 9 AM.  Contribution's in Bill's name to Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Church would be appreciated and will be accepted at the visitation.  David D. Jarrett Funeral Home of Mahanoy City is in charge of arrangements. Please visit www.jarrettfuneralhome.com for more information.
